Barkham’s
Own Medal for the Queen’s Golden Jubilee
At
the Jubilee Function, specially designed Barkham Jubilee Commemorative
medals were presented to children under 8 living in Barkham. Mr Sam Hosgood, who has been Parish Council Chairman
for the last 18 years, presented the medals, which were kindly donated
by the Parish Council. The
design of these medals is based on the chain of office worn by the
Parish Council Chairman, and is therefore unique to Barkham.
On one side within the four quadrants of a circle are depicted
The Domesday Book (in which Barkham is mentioned), the spire of St
James’ Church, an oak tree (Barkham was originally part of Windsor
Great Forest) and an anvil and horse shoe (the smithy was once attached
to the Bull pub). The other side is engraved “Queen’s Golden Jubilee
2002 Barkham”. They
come complete with a lovely red, white and blue ribbon.
Some
children who had registered to receive a medal did not collect them on
the day. These medals
are in the Barkham Post Office and can be claimed from there.
