Barkham Square

Over the years, there has been much discussion about the development of Barkham Square which is an area of land bounded by the Arborfield Green development to the south, Langley Common Road to the west and Commonfield Lane to the east.  In September 2022, a Vision Document was issued on behalf of Crest which described this new development as an extension of the Arborfield Garrison SDL for 1000 dwellings with two access points - one on Langley Common Road and the other on Commonfield Lane.

With further delays in finalising the Local Plan Update, uncertainty whether Hall Farm will be included and Wokingham Borough Council’s failed 5 Year Land Supply, the possibility of this going ahead feels all the closer.  Barkham and the surrounding area is particularly vulnerable in the absence of an up-to-date local plan as there are already many applications at various stages of the planning process which are NOT included in any version of the local plan.  Many of you have already responded to some of these such as Blagrove Meadows and Edneys Hill.

In 2018, Barkham Parish Council led a petition against continuing development with focus on Barkham Square which was signed by some 4000 residents from Barkham and the surrounding parishes.  You will not be surprised by the reasons for this support – traffic, enough is enough, encroachment on the countryside and increasing demand on local services.  It is astonishing that 97% of all new build in the Borough has been south of the M4.  

As yet, no formal Planning Application has been published but IF and WHEN one is presented, we will make sure you are aware so you can submit your comments as you wish.
