DevWatch Alert
School Road to be closed beyond Wood Lane to through traffic

This is for residents’ information only.

We send out an alert in 2020 concerning a proposal to install a “Modal Filter” in School Road beyond Wood Lane, which would close the road to all through traffic apart from emergency vehicles.

Subsequently it appeared that this was “on the back burner” and there were no immediate plans to implement it.  However, it now appears that WBC plan to do the work this summer. Whilst this is in Arborfield Parish it will affect Barkham residents who regularly use School Road.

WBC have stated:

“The closure is currently planned for the summer holidays 2022. We will be installing bollards to restrict access for vehicles (although emergency services will be able to lower the bollards if they need access). In addition, a turning head will be created to allow vehicles to turn around when they get to the bollards”

In terms of the impact on Langley Common Road WBC state:

“The scheme should have a negligible impact on vehicles using Langley Common Road as most traffic should already be using Langley Common Road if it is not accessing Arborfield village itself and/or the Coombes School.”

The truth is that many vehicles use School Road as a through route, so the closure will increase traffic on Langley Common Road.  However, the development of the Arborfield Cross Relief Road (Observer Way) was intended to take all the through traffic that would previously have gone through Arborfield village.  Closure of School Road will make it much more likely that through traffic does use Observer Way and new signage will direct traffic that way.

WBC have also said they will consider reducing the speed limit on Langley Common Road to 30mph and BPC have gathered data to support this.

It is also necessary for WBC to obtain a Traffic Regulation Order to permanently block School Road in the location where they are installing the bollards, which is currently being processed and assuming there are no objections the Prohibition of Motor Vehicles TRO will be in place by the end of April.

The Instalcom appeal for their Wood Lane site is still pending but could also have an effect to traffic going forward.

Kind Regards
